Shapour Azarm received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1984. He then joined the University of Maryland where he is currently serving as Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of Design Decision Support Laboratory. His research interests are in models and methods for:

  • Design for Market Systems (DMS), including design of single (category) products, product lines, and bundled (multi-category) products with supply chain considerations,
  • Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM), including multi-objective design optimization, approximation assisted optimization, and multi-attribute design making for determining the “best” solutions, and
  • Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO), including optimization-based design of complex systems that can be decomposed into multiple subsystems.

His research with his group has resulted in about 80 journal articles. Under Dr. Azarm’s supervision, 22 Ph.D. students have been graduated. Dr. Azarm has been a Review Editor of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization, an Associate Editor of Mechanics-Based Design of Structures and Machines, an Editorial Board Member of International Journal of Reliability and Safety, and an Advisory Board Member of the ASME Transactions, Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering. He was an Associate Editor of the ASME Transactions, Journal of Mechanical Design for three terms. He also served as a (co-) Guest Editor of two special issues of Journal of Mechanical Design.

Dr. Azarm is an Operating Board member of the ASME Systems and Design Group, the largest group in the ASME with over 33,000 members, member-at-large of the ASME Committee on Division Operations and Training, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the ASME Design Engineering Division (ASME DED). He is a past Chair of the ASME DED Advisory Committee, past Chair of the ASME DED, one of the largest divisions in ASME, past Chair of the ASME Design Automation Committee, past Conference Chair and past Paper Review Chair of the ASME Design Automation Conference.

Among numerous awards, he received the ASME Design Automation Award for his “sustained and meritorious contributions to research in Design Automation, specifically in computational design optimization and engineering design decision making.

Dr. Azarm is a Fellow of the ASME and a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland.
